I stopped in at the Blue Mountain Brewery in Afton, Virginia for lunch and, you guessed it, a beer. I ordered fish tacos which were excellent. There were three tacos and they were large and they came with cole slaw. Delicious. I enjoyed the lunch with Rye Barchetta, a full-bodied rye IPA and Full Nelson, a very drinkable pale ale. The atmosphere in the restaurant/brewery was really nice and I’d definitely stop there again if in the area. Oh, and I liked the Full Nelson so much that I brought a six-pack home. I’ve given away a few cans to close friends that are “wrestling” with some of life’s issues and I felt this would be a thoughtful gift. They were both very grateful. The last two cans are for me! I also brought home a bottle of the Local Species Belgian but haven’t tried it yet.
Rye IPA
4 Hands Brewing Company, St. Louis, MO
I stopped in at 4 Hands Brewing Company in St. Louis, Missouri and tried the Divided Sky Rye IPA which was really tasty with both the hops bitterness and the rye spice. I also tried the Chocolate Milk Stout which was so tasty that I bought a bottle to take home. As of this writing, it’s still in my beer fridge waiting for that perfect moment. I might just make a stout float with it. So rich and chocolatey!
Raleigh Brewing Company, Raleigh, NC
I stopped with a group of work colleagues at the Raleigh Brewing Company in Raleigh, North Carolina. We had arranged a brewery tour with the owner. What an experience. The owner and his wife started by hanging out in the tap room with us for an hour and sharing each and every beer on tap with us. The House of Clay Rye IPA was very good, the Hidden Pipe Porter was very good, The Holiday Bash Spiced Winter Warmer was very good and the Miller’s Toll Imperial Oatmeal Stout was very good. I recall all of the beers being very good but only noted those by name. After our tasting, the owner took us into the brew house and gave us an hour long tour, sharing his experiences with the craft brewing industry. Their business also includes a vibrant brewery supply business that covers the entire eastern seaboard. If I were going to start a brewery, this is where I’d go for equipment. The supply store also outfits homebrewers. At the end of our tour we stopped back in the tap room for one last beer. The tap room is a really cool space, semi-industrial and semi restaurant-feel. It includes one good-sized private room for groups. Although they do not serve food there are often food trucks in their parking lot. Oh, and as we were leaving we purchased some growlers to bring back and share with co-workers. A great time was had by all.
Crank Arm Brewing, Raleigh, NC
I stopped at Crank Arm Brewing in Raleigh, North Carolina just long enough to have a Rickshaw Rye IPA. I enjoy the added bite of rye in an IPA. This was very good. Crank Arm Brewing adds a passion for bikes to a passion for beer for a really cool bike/beer vibe. I hope I get a chance to go back and try more of their beers and enjoy the vibe again. Maybe next time I’ll cycle in.
Bootlegger’s Brewery, Fullerton, CA
I stopped in at Bootlegger’s Brewery in Fullerton, California for a Rustic Rye IPA and was not disappointed. The spice of the rye added to the hop flavor to create a very tasty beer. And, the tasting room had a really cool flow both indoor and outdoor.
