I stopped in at Barley’s Brewing Company in Columbus, Ohio and tried the Chupacabra Imperial Brown Ale. This is a tasty beer. I was hoping for even more vanilla and chocolate influence but regardless it was very good.
Brown Ale
Legend Brewing Company, Richmond, VA
I stopped in Legend Brewing Company in Richmond, Virginia with a colleague for dinner and a beer. We greatly enjoyed dinner on their deck in wonderful weather – thankful for a clear day after dozens of days of rain. We each enjoyed great salads – Cobb and Greek. We paired them with the brown ale and my buddy also enjoyed an imperial brown ale. Both the food and the beers were delightful and enjoying them outdoors overlooking the James River in Richmond made it all the better.
The Shop Beer Company (formerly Cartel Brewery) Phoenix, AZ
I tried to stop in at Cartel Brewing but was informed that it is now The Shop Beer Company in Phoenix, Arizona. I tried all four beers plus their imperial IPA. Very nice! I especially liked the Tangerine Radler 480 and Grapefruit DPA. I love the fruity, fresh, tart flavor in the beer. The imperial IPA was solid. The Biere De Garde was very well done but not my style. And the Coffee Brown Ale was simply delicious. Very well done and well worth the stop. Making the stop even better, the bartender/brewer was great to talk to and shared info on two other breweries that were not on my list, Blasted Barley and Pedal Haus. So, that increased my stops for the evening.
Coastal Empire Beer Company, Savannah, GA
There are two reasons I write this blog. The first is that I love craft beer. The second is that I love meeting the people who make craft beer. This is a story about both reasons. When I recently traveled to Savannah, Georgia for business I contacted a few breweries that offered hours only on days I would not be in town. I heard from one brewery that they would not be able to accommodate a visit from me. However when I reached out to Coastal Empire Beer Company, the co-founder, Kevin Haborak, told me that I was welcome to drop by. So, I did. Today, on the way back to the airport.
Kevin arranged for his brother Chris to meet me, show me around, and allow me to taste practically everything on tap. These guys make awesome beer. Let me try to step you through a few of these. The Savannah Brown is a delicious brown ale, caramelly, sweet, malty, solid and very drinkable. The sort of brown ale you’d drink several of, especially say in the fall when there’s a slight chill in the air. The barrel aged version of this is like putting it on steroids. Wow! The flavor from the barrels makes it all that much richer. This puts it in the category of a sipping beer that I would enjoy after dinner instead of dessert, in a snifter. Perfect. Going a completely different direction is the Tybee Island Blonde Ale. This is a great option for hot summer days. Cans of this are perfect for the beach. One of these after cutting the lawn would be perfect. I also tried a pineapple, coconut and sea salt gose which is basically a secret weapon. Wow! This beer is off the hook! Its sweet and salty and tart all at the same time. My tastebuds were all over the place. Let me wrap with Dawn Patrol. Think Imperial Stout. Think Chocolatey goodness. Think Mole. Think Peppery Spices. Wrap all four of those together. KaBam! This is crazy good.
If you line in Savannah or are visiting Savannah you must stop in here. There’s at least one beer for every person’s tastebuds. You will love this beer. I need to figure out how to get distribution north to Maryland. The rest of the country needs these beers. Chris and Kevin, thank you for taking the time to meet with me. Thanks for the snifter. I will eagerly anticipate drinking Dawn Patrol from it in the comfort of my own home some day. And, I’m hoping to bring my wife to Savannah at some point and will definitely stop in to see you when I do. Keep up the great work!
Outliers Brewing Company, Indianapolis, IN
I stopped in at Outliers Brewing Company in Indianapolis, Indiana and enjoyed a taste of Blau Machen Pilsner but what I really enjoyed was the Country Brown. I really enjoyed the maltiness, caramel and even chocolate flavors of the Country Brown and best of all, it wasn’t heavy. It was very drinkable. A delightful beer for the fall.
Engine 15 Brewing Company, Jacksonville Beach, FL
I stopped in at Engine 15 Brewing Company in Jacksonville Beach, Florida. One of the flagship beers is Nut Sack Brown Ale which I couldn’t resist trying. What a treat! This is a smooth, nutty, brown ale. Full of malty sweetness. This beer is easy to drink. I enjoyed it so much I purchased a bomber bottle to bring home and share with my friends and family.
Ale Asylum, Madison, WI
I stopped in at Ale Asylum in both Madison and Milwaukee. The Thai Peanut Salad was great and the Curry Chicken Sandwich was also great. Madtown Nutbrown was malty and sweet. Radler was a tasty mix of Hefeweizen and grapefruit juice. The food and drink was superb and I highly recommend both.
NOLA Brewing, New Orleans, LA
I stopped in at NOLA Brewing in New Orleans, Louisiana and tasted a few beers. The NOLA Brown was solid. The Citra Rebirth was a delicious citra hopped IPA which I really enjoyed. The Double Hopped Hopitoulas was heavy and sweet. And the Rumplestoutskin was a delicious stout aged in rum barrels.
Sycamore Brewing, Charlotte, NC
I stopped in at Sycamore Brewing in Charlotte, North Carolina for a sandwich and a beer. The pressed focaccia cheddar grilled cheese sandwich was delicious. And the Serendipity Vanilla session ale I enjoyed with it was also delicious. I highly recommend the food and the beer. I also tried the bourbon barrel aged huckleberry pie brown ale. Also delicious. I highly recommend Sycamore Brewing to everyone in Charlotte and hope I have the chance to return.

Props Brewery & Grill, Fort Walton Beach, FL
I stopped in at Props Brewery & Grill in Fort Walton Beach, Florida for dinner on my way to a conference hotel. I enjoyed the Spicy Shrimp Wrap, and it was really spicy. The 4 Kings American Brown Ale was the perfect accompaniment to dinner. I enjoyed this easy-drinking brown ale. It was malty but not quite sweet.
