I stopped in at Five Churches Brewing in New Britain, Connecticut for a beer. Since it is Fall and since this is one of the beers the bartender recommended I tried their Once and for Fall Porter. Delicious. This beer is not pretentious or unusual. It is a fabulous porter. Smooth. Malty. Feels like a mouthful of fall when you drink it. You need to enjoy the season at Five Churches Brewing. I’ve fallen for it!
Porter
Great Heights Brewing Company, Houston, TX
I stopped in at Great Heights Brewing Company in Houston, Texas. Decisions, Decisions. Their Porter was a great choice. It is cold enough outside to want to drink a slightly darker beer, heavier beer. This was perfect. Yet, not too heavy. Easy to drink and delicious. Malty, caramelly, chocolatey. And I even had the great opportunity to sit next to Santa Claus at the bar. Good times!
Town in City Brewing Company, Houston, TX
I stopped in at Town in City Brewing Company in Houston, TX and at the bartender’s recommendation went with the City Porter. This was no disappointment! Talk about smooth and drinkable, full of flavor, yet not heavy at all. Rich, malty, hints of coffee. This was the perfect beer between landing at the airport and hitting my hotel late at night.
Free Range Brewing, Charlotte, NC
I stopped in at Free Range Brewing in Charlotte, North Carolina. When I considered the beer options I simply had to order Uncle Bob’s Sweet Nuts. Seriously. The website described it as a maple pecan porter. There’s hints of pecan and maple but essentially its a solid porter. Smooth. Drinkable. Perfect for a cool evening.
8th Wonder Brewery, Houston, TX
I stopped in at 8th Wonder Brewery in Houston, Texas and tried their Rocket Fuel Vietnamese Coffee Porter. Wow. I feel like I just drank the 8th wonder of the world. Delicious. Smooth. Rich. Malty. Coffee. Caramelly. Sweet. This is a go to beer for anyone visiting Houston.
Stoneface Brewing, Newington, NH
I stopped in at Stoneface Brewing in Newington, New Hampshire. Their Porter is THE BEST PORTER I’ve ever had. Stoneface Porter for President! You need to stop in and try it!
Parkway Brewing Company, Salem, VA
I stopped in at Parkway Brewing Company in Salem, Virginia for a beer. I wound up trying a flight. The brewery has a great feel. It includes a wide open space with various seating options. Also when I was there a food truck and live music were featured. In terms of beer I really enjoyed the Majestic Mullet Krispy Kolsch. This is a fresh, drinkable beer. Delightful. I also enjoyed three IPA’s – Get Bent, Factory Girl and Grapefruit. I enjoyed the hoppiness of these. Good flavors. Slightly resiny for my taste. The Seeing Colors Spiced Ale is a delicious fall seasonal. I really loved the spices. Baltic Porter is also a very tasty, darker beer. I tried a quick sample of the Gose on tap which was sour, salty and refreshing. I recommend stopping in and trying these beers!
Maui Brewing Company, Maui, HI
I stopped in at Maui Brewing Company in Maui, Hawaii in order to answer the question, “What’s better than Coconut HIWA Porter?” and I found the answer: Imperial Coconut Porter! I have enjoyed Coconut HIWA Porter on the mainland in the past and while in Maui recently had the opportunity to try the Imperial Coconut Porter. This was such a big, rich beer. I totally enjoyed it. It boasts rich flavors of coconut and chocolate. If you ever have the chance to visit Maui, this brewery is a must destination and this great beer is a must taste.
Goose Island Beer Company, Chicago, IL
I stopped in at Goose Island Beer Company (the Goose Island Clybourn Brewpub) in Chicago, Illinois for dinner and a beer. I enjoyed a fish taco and the spring salad. Both were tasty. With some guidance from the bartender I decided to try the Snead Porter, an English Brown Porter, which was delicious – malty, caramelly, yummy!. And I had a small pour of the Adaniversary ESB which was quite tasty but much more hoppy than any ESB I’d ever had before. Goose Island is definitely a brewery stop you want to make when in Chicago!
Isley Brewing Company, Richmond, VA
I stopped in at Isley Brewing Company in Richmond, Virginia. One of their flagship beers is Choosy Mother Peanut Butter Porter. This is an awesome beer. The flavor is right-on! Of course, you pretty-much need to be a peanut butter lover (at least, liker) to enjoy this. The porter is not as heavy as a stout. This is very easy to drink. The peanut butter flavor is very present but not overpowering. Delicious. Stop in and try some!
