I stopped in at Prospect Point Brewing in Frederick, Maryland with my wife and my son and his wife. We enjoyed a few hours of relaxing and talking and enjoying great beers. Their Homebrew English Mild is one of the best beers of this style I have ever tasted. I also enjoyed their Chocolate Thunder Stout. My son and his wife enjoyed several of their other beers. All of their offerings are great. My wife doesn’t drink beer so we brought in a coffee mug with wine for her – shh! – don’t tell the brewer. We also brought in some food from Friscos Restaurant. Friscos’ sandwiches, salads and exploded potatoes are all delicious. The beers paired wonderfully with the food. We have been eagerly anticipating the opening of Prospect Point Brewing because it is literally a mile down the street from my son’s house. I know it will be a family favorite. Their beer and their relaxing setting will bring us back again and again. We were also blessed to have met the brewers at the Maryland Craft Beer Festival where my sons and I have volunteered for the past several years. So, I’ve got three takeaways for you. Go to the Maryland Craft Beer Festival and try new beers and get out and support Maryland breweries, enjoy great food at Friscos, and by all means head to Prospect Point Brewing and have a beer!!

Yards Brewing Company, Philadelphia, PA
I stopped in at Yards Brewing Company in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It seemed reasonable to have a flight to check out their beers – which I did. I enjoyed the beers with dinner – the two meet barbecue board – brisket and ribs. The food was tasty. ANd it paired nicely with the beers. Their Pale Ale is really nice. It’s a hoppy pale. Their Extra Special Ale is pretty close to an ESB. Nice. Signature IPA is a very drinkable IPA – not over the top hoppy. But I’m totally in love with Brawler English Mild. I’ve visited many breweries and very few have an English Mild on tap. I liked this enough to purchase a six pack that I lugged over a mile back to my hotel (on business travel) and fortunately I drove to Philly so I don’t have to worry about getting it past TSA in an airport. Brawler is smooth – very smooth. It’s rich. It’s mildly caramelly. It’s light. It’s so easy to drink. Delicious. Well, as it happened I felt urged to get another flight. I tried Pynk sour berry which was just that sour berry. Refreshing. I also tried Post Run Beer – a standard Lager – which my wife enjoyed. The Nitro Coffee Brawler was nice but seemed like the coffee might need to be stronger. Not sure. And Washington’s Reserve Bourbon Barrel Aged Porter was rich and delicious. Frankly, I think anything aged in bourbon barrels is amazing. Maybe I’ll be buried in a bourbon barrel. Where did that come from? Any way, Washington’s Reserve makes for a delightful dessert drink.
Motor City Brewing Works, Detroit, MI
I stopped in at Motor City Brewing Works in Detroit, Michigan for dinner and a beer. I had the summer veggie pizza special. This was the first time I’d ever had kale on a pizza. It was delicious. I’d recommend Motor City Brewing Works just for the pizza. It’s always freshly made. Outstanding! I wanted a light and refreshing beer to accompany the nice warm day and the pizza. The server recommended Summer Brew which was perfect. Light and refreshing with a hint of orange. I also tried the Ghettoblaster which is one of their signature beers and this was superb. A great malty flavor.
